As a self-taught artist, Alisa Zanko uses her delicate painted sequences to explore elements of world-making and self discovery. Starting with a string of unconscious and dream-like thoughts, Zanko pushes the boundaries of reality and representation by juxtaposing things that should not exist together. Objects pulled from interiors collaged together with architectural elements that frame theatrical stages for exploring themes of identity, there is an underlying tone toward disguise. Hidden figures coupled with carefully staged scenes in unusual context offer up this sense of ambiguity toward both reality and the truth.
